Reviewing the Audiobook Market

As part of The Bookseller’s FutureBook Conference 2019, Harris Interactive conducted a piece of exploratory research, looking at how audiobooks are listened to. We conducted a total of 2,177 online interviews using our Harris24 online survey on 8th October 2019.

This was targeted only towards people who have read/listened to a book in the past 12 months.
Data was collected with quotas on age, gender and region to reflect national census data for UK citizens aged 18+.

Some key findings:

  • 77% of the total UK population has consumed a book (including printed books, eBooks & audiobooks) in the past 12 months. On average, book consumers consume 12 books a year.
  • 15% listened to an audiobook in the last year (including 11% digitally and 6% physically). There’s also a clear overlap between those consuming audiobooks and eBooks.
  • Audiobook listeners are also engaging with other spoken word content, particularly via podcasts. Audiobooks accounted for 8% of total book reading/listening time in the past year.
